Getting Her Life Back with a New Nose Prosthesis

Back in 2017 our client was very concerned about getting a beautiful nose prosthesis result; one that was feminine, aesthetically pleasing, and reminiscent of her nose shape before deformity as well. She provided samples of beautiful women’s noses from different angles to help illustrate what she was hoping we could achieve for her. We know how important the nose is, not just in function, but in aesthetics. Medical Art Prosthetics has a long history of working with Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons, including such renowned nose cosmetic doctors like Fred Menick, MD

Successful surgical reconstruction of the nose is never guaranteed, let alone a guarantee of achieving a nose shape that the patient will be very happy with. Plastic surgeons know this and want to offer patients all the options, including the prosthetic nose option, before they embark on a long series of procedures involving skin grafts from the forehead or other areas. The prognosis might be further complicated if there is a significant chance of tissue rejection or in the case of oncology patients, tumor recurrence. The prosthetic nose allows easy and regular access to monitor the underlying tissue bed and nasal cavity for tumor recurrence. That is why we receive referrals from many head and neck surgeons who are familiar with the life changing benefits of having a beautifully rendered prosthetic nose.

Her First Nose Prosthesis – A Team Approach in Madison

The photos and her input were patiently considered as we discussed some limitations in having to design the nose prosthesis over the underlying nose tissue. Many things are considered by the anaplastologist in designing a nasal prosthesis. Universal challenges include retention; how to attach the prosthetic nose securely. We know that facial movements like smiling will move the skin under the prosthesis and with the presence of perspiration, skin oils and moisture from breathing the adhesive bond can be affected. So, in cases like hers we design the bottom edges of a prosthetic nose to fit snuggly into the nasolabial folds so they remain hidden making obviating the need for any adhesive. A perfect edge blend is achieved. These design nuances and attachment strategies are critical to successful nasal prosthesis outcomes.

Anaplastologists Jim Hogue and Greg Gion worked together creating and delivering slightly different versions for our patient’s benefit and to contribute to our ongoing anaplastologist certification training program in the accredited Madison, Wisconsin facility.

A Different Nasal Prosthetics Team and Place in Florida

In 2021 after 4 years of daily use Gion and his son Alexander, who was exploring anaplastology as a career, met with our client to deliver a new nasal prosthesis and clean and retint one of her prostheses. This session took place in professional offices located in Gainesville, Florida to accommodate our client’s location and that of 2 other patients needing nasal and larger midfacial prostheses. The durability of the prosthesis is evident in the photos which illustrate how well the very thin margins have remained untattered even with daily adhesive cleanings. We applaud our loyal client for her vigilant care in maintaining her prosthesis over 4 years!

Yet Another Anaplastology Team in Tampa, Florida

That was 2021 and now in 2025 another 4 years have passed and so we see her again this time in Tampa, Florida. Tampa is our location previously served by anaplastologist Shay Kilby, MS who now lives and practices in Asheville, NC. This time in Tampa our client was seen by Gion and anaplastology representative Danielle Burgess, CMI, MFA. After our final tinting and fitting sessions, which were both accomplished in just one day, we delivered a new nasal prosthesis which we hope will continue to provide great service for at least another 4 years.

A Florida Destination for Nasal Prosthetics and Anaplastology

Since this meeting we have already had another Medical Art Prosthetics anaplastologist, Julia Schomberg visit the Tampa location to get acquainted with new patients and work closely with Danielle. Please check back soon to learn more about the wonderful anaplastology available through the teamwork of Julia Schomberg, MSOP and Danielle Burgess, CMI, MFA.
