The Slip-On Ear Prosthesis

Ear Prosthesis Wear for a Lifetime

Anyone who wears an ear prosthesis understands that accuracy is not a luxury. It is essential to daily confidence and comfort. A successful ear prosthesis must do more than simply replace what was lost. It must fit precisely, remain secure throughout the day without distraction, and blend so naturally in color, contour, and translucency that it becomes virtually indistinguishable from surrounding tissue.

This level of excellence is not exceptional for us. It is our standard of care. Every prosthesis we create is designed with long-term wearability, aesthetic realism, and patient confidence in mind.

Gabe’s 22-year relationship with our practice is a testament to that commitment. He continues to choose a custom slip-on ear prosthesis because it consistently delivers the comfort, reliability, and natural appearance he depends on. His case also illustrates an important clinical reality: for many patients, a meticulously crafted prosthetic ear can offer a predictable, non-surgical alternative to repeated reconstructive procedures.

In 2006, Greg Gion was invited to publish an opinion piece examining this very discussion; highlighting the practical, aesthetic, and long-term considerations that patients and surgeons must weigh when deciding between serial reconstruction and prosthetic restoration:

Advancing the Conversation Around Ear Prosthetics

Maxillofacial surgeon Edward Ellis III, DDS, invited Greg Gion to author a comprehensive article outlining the benefits of ear prosthetics, a collaboration that reflected years of mutual professional respect. Through ongoing cooperation with surgeons Ed Ellis and Douglas Sinn at the University of Texas Southwestern, a strong referral relationship was established.

Patients seeking highly realistic prosthetic ears traveled from across the United States to Medical Art Prosthetics, drawn by the practice’s reputation and its documented results. When patients desired implant-retained options, Gion was able to refer them confidently to his surgical colleagues at the university medical center. This collaborative model helped shift referral dynamics among anaplastology, maxillofacial prosthodontics, and surgery, creating a more patient-centered pathway for care.

The resulting article presents the anaplastologist’s clinical perspective on ear prosthetics, including both the advantages and limitations of the approach. One of the most important considerations when choosing a slip-over or adhesive-retained prosthesis is flexibility. These options preserve future choices. Surgical ablation of microtia tissue in preparation for autologous reconstruction or osseointegration, by contrast, is irreversible.

A well-designed slip-over ear prosthesis is non-surgical, pain-free, and low risk. It can typically be delivered within days and, in many cases, remains secure without adhesive. For many individuals, this option offers an elegant, conservative solution.

Wearing an Ear Prosthesis Is Personal

When we reconnected with Gabe, he shared that he had previously received a prosthesis from a practitioner working within a dental clinic. Unfortunately, he was disappointed with the aesthetic outcome. His experience underscored something we know well: creating a lifelike ear prosthesis is both technically demanding and deeply personal.

Anaplastology is a small, highly specialized field where artistry and trust matter tremendously. Our consultations are designed to be collaborative conversations — opportunities for patients to share past experiences and define what feels authentic to them. We were pleased that our Tampa location made it convenient for Gabe to return and pursue a result aligned with his expectations.

A Master Mold That Endured for 22 Years

One of the unique advantages of our process is meticulous archiving. Gabe’s original master mold, created 22 years ago, had been safely preserved. Using that mold, we produced a new wax prototype that faithfully captured the subtle anatomical details he valued.

However, ears like all living tissues change over time. Over two decades, Gabe’s natural ear had increased in both size and contour. A new impression and updated model allowed us to carefully adapt the sculpture to reflect those changes while maintaining symmetry and realism.

The preliminary wax prototype was aligned and refined directly on Gabe before final laboratory finishing. Color documentation was then completed using silicone swatches that captured the nuanced tones, translucencies, and vascular characteristics of his skin.

With this updated anatomical and color data recorded in Florida, the case moved to our primary laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. There, the anaplastology team reviewed every detail to ensure accuracy in processing.

Completing Gabe’s New Ear Prosthesis

Anaplastologist Julia Schomberg will oversee the final molding and processing of Gabe’s new prosthesis using the softer silicone material he prefers. The detailed laboratory phase will be completed in Madison before final delivery in Tampa.

We look forward to sharing the completed result. Gabe’s case reflects what we believe wholeheartedly: precision, preservation of options, and collaboration — all in the service of restoring confidence in a way that feels natural and personal.

Stay tuned for the final outcome.
