Finger Prosthesis – Information for Medical Professionals

Our work with medical professionals is built on four decades of collaboration with reconstructive and orthopedic specialists nationwide.

Medical Art Prosthetics provides clinically integrated silicone restorations that balance anatomy, prosthetic design, and rehabilitation planning.

Our anaplastologists provide detailed clinical notes to referring providers and remain available for collaborative care throughout the patient’s rehabilitation journey.

  • Anatomic precision: Direct impression and scanning to replicate unique surface details, nail bed anatomy, and adjacent tissue contours.
  • Retention design: Selection among suction-fit, medical-grade adhesive, ring, or mechanical suspension systems to meet patient tolerance and daily use requirements.
  • Color science: Multi-layer color formulation to account for subdermal hues, capillary tinting, and environmental exposure.

  • Material science: Silicone durometer selection tailored for durability, flexibility, and comfort; intrinsic pigmentation for colorfast realism.
  • Volume management: Prosthesis design accommodates soft-tissue volume fluctuation, edema, and temperature-induced changes.
  • Integration potential: Compatible with mechanical articulation systems (e.g., Point Designs, Naked Prosthetics) when function enhancement is indicated.

  • Follow-up continuity: Documentation and mold retention ensure accurate future duplication or revision.

Our Prosthetic Finger Process

Creating your custom finger prosthesis is a hands-on, collaborative process guided by our expert team.

Many individual finger prostheses can be completed in as little as three days when patients stay near one of our offices for fittings.

We first record causes of amputation (dog bite, infection, circulation, etc.) and discuss goals and activities of daily living (ADLs). We make sure the affected finger is well healed and ready for prosthetic restoration.

On the same day we can take a simple silicone impression of the amputated and unaffected fingers. From the silicone impression we are able to make a precise model of the residual finger.

In the next session we address both the skin texture details and the fit of the wax prototype of the finger in place. We verify you are happy with the length, shape, and alignment of the prototype

The fitting session also includes our skin color matching procedure with our custom swatches that accurately captures in photos the array of pigmentation. From experience and visual acuity the medical the artist can translate color references and make minute adjustments during fabrication using these nuanced silicone swatches.

finger prosthesis perfect color matched

The finished high resolution silicone prosthetic fingers are demolded and prepared for final delivery. Any color details needed are painstakingly added by the anaplastologist.

We check each final prosthesis for fit and make any final adjustments. We want each client to be happy so we will make corrections or adjustments if needed. We provide full aftercare instructions (link to adhesives/instruction). Each prosthesis should last years, and master molds are safely archived for replacements whenever needed.
